Businesses offered interest free loans to go green

The Carbon Trust has begun offering over £100 million in interest free loans to help businesses become more energy-efficient.

Announced in the Budget, the additional funding is largely being delivered through the Trust’s existing loan scheme over a two-year period.

In England, small and medium-sized enterprises can borrow between £5,000 and £200,000 to invest in energy-efficient plant and machinery, although larger firms can apply for the loans in Scotland.

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Miliband, is now urging firms to take advantage of the scheme.

‘This real help […] means that businesses in every corner of Britain can now improve their energy efficiency and make real savings on their energy bills at a time when every penny counts,’ he said.

The Carbon Trust estimates that the Government’s latest funding injection could reduce firms’ costs by up to 20%, saving them in excess of £20m a year in energy bills.
